Coloproctology - 1st Proctology Department
The Colon Surgery of Coloproctology Department, formerly the Scientific Research Institute of Proctology of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia, was established in 1982, which scientific and practical work was headed by Academician L. L. Nazarov.
Since 1999, the head of the department has been PhD, Professor A. S. Hakobyan. The department is considered the main base of the Department of Coloproctology of Yerevan State Medical University named after Mkhitar Heratsi. 3 doctoral theses have been defended by the doctors of the department: on the treatment of peritonitis, complicated colon cancer, and rectal injuries. 3 candidate theses have also been defended. Numerous scientific articles have been published by the staff in foreign and national medical journals.
Many years of practical and scientific experience of the staff of the clinic allows to perform large-scale colon resections with primary closure and other surgical interventions, laparoscopic and open.

- Complicated forms of Crohn's disease
- Megacolon (Hirschsprung's disease)
- Teratoid polyps of the rectum
- Injuries of the large intestine.
Effective surgical approaches have been developed and are being used in cases of rectal prolapse and postoperative narrowing and compression insufficiency of the anal canal. Early surgical reconstruction, creation of intestinal continuity, formation of an artificial compression and a reservoir is widely used at patients with colostomy, in case of fistula and rectum removal
Surgeries for diseases of the anal canal, perineum and coccyx are also carried out in the department:
- Surgical treatment of hemorrhoids
- Acute and chronic paraproctitis
- Anal fissure
- Epithelial coccygeal tract
- Diffuse pyoderma of the sacrococcygeal region
- Rectocele and postpartum perineal tears
- Rectovaginal colon bladder canal
- Anal compression insufficiency
- Rectum and anal polyps
- Genital warts of the perianal region.
The operations are performed using modern equipment.
